1943 Retrospective Hugo Awards to be presented at Worldcon 76!


On Saturday, December 2, Worldcon 76 in San Jose and Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon (the 76th and 77th World Science Fiction Conventions) issued the following joint announcement:

The Hugo Awards, presented first in 1953 and annually since 1955, are science fiction’s most prestigious award, and one of the World Science Fiction Convention’s unique and distinguished institutions.

Just this summer, the Hugo Awards were recognized by the Guinness Book of World Records as the longest-running science fiction award.

Since 1993,  Worldcon committees have had the option of awarding Retrospective Hugo Awards for past Worldcon years where they had not been presented 25, 50, or 100 years prior to the contemporary convention, with the exception of the hiatus during World War II when no Worldcon was convened.

This summer, however, a revision to the rules was ratified which gives Worldcon 76 in San Jose and Dublin 2019: An Irish Worldcon an opportunity which, if neglected, won’t return for another quarter century.

With that opportunity in mind, we are pleased to announce that Worldcon 76 will be presenting the 1943 and Dublin 2019 the 1944 Retrospective Hugo Awards during their respective conferences:

Worldcon 76 in San Jose invites you on the evening of August 16, 2018,  to walk the red carpet back through time to a 1943 Worldcon that never was, and celebrate with other fans the works of 1942.

Dublin 2019, An Irish Worldcon is planning a First Night extravaganza, combining Opening Ceremonies and the Retro Hugos, celebrating the past, present and future of both the genre and Worldcon.

During those tumultuous years, there was no shortage of speculative fiction, including the introductory versions of works destined to become classics. Live and animated cinematic works of all lengths provided escape to people around the world.

We invite you now to join us on a brief visual tour of those years, some of the marvelous, the strange, the terrifying and the wonderful works of genre, and help us select the Retro Hugos for works of 1942 and 1943.
As we make our future tomorrow, so too we can celebrate these Visions of Future Past.

Hotel Reservations Open For Members Tomorrow

The Number One Question we've been asked since spring is "When will room reservations open?"

We have just sent out an email to all registered members informing them that hotel reservations for members open tomorrow, Nov 22, at 1PM PST.
Reservation information will be posted publicly here on the website at a later date, to ensure members get first crack at the hotels.

(Actually, we sent out 3, because yours truly typoed both the date and time, setting it two weeks in the past. Clearly I was undercaffeinated.)

GoH exhibit coordinator, Frank Hayes exhibit

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Worldcon 76 is looking for a volunteer who is familiar with Frank Hayes’ work. You would work as part of Curated Exhibits to create the Guest of Honor (GoH) exhibit for Frank Hayes. Between now and Worldcon 76 you would take point in developing an interesting and entertaining GoH exhibit that explores Frank Hayes as a person and filker, his work, and the impact of both on fandom. You will be responsible for sourcing, permissions, and planning in cooperation with the Curated Exhibits team and GoH liaison. You will also be responsible for performing/overseeing set-up and tear-down of the GoH Exhibit.

Time commitment: 

There is no specific time commitment associated with this role, but your efforts will be primarily prior to the convention developing the exhibit. The exhibit will need to be set up the day before the convention opens and torn down, packed, and ready to ship the day after the convention closes. Time during the convention will be limited to an occasional check on the exhibit to maintain proper set-up.

Experience, attributes, skills, and/or abilities:

You will need to bring your creativity, self-motivation, and willingness to work as a part of a team.  You will need good writing skills.  Knowledge and/or experience with researching and exhibits, displays, or presentations is desirable.  However, the Curated Exhibits team is willing to work with a motivated individual who is willing to learn.  Knowledge of object handling, graphic design, or ADA accessibility guidelines is a bonus.

Physical requirements: 

Physical requirements will depend on final plans for the exhibit, but probably involve bending, reaching, possible work on step stool or low ladder, and light to moderate lifting, possibly above the head.  However, don’t let this deter you.  If you have physical limitations, we will work with you to find help for set-up and tear-down at the convention.

Callahan's Place Proprietor

Tasks and Responsibilities:

Wanna run a bar in the fashion and substance of Callahan’s Place, by Spider Robinson? We’re looking for someone to own the bar. Responsibilities will include designing the space, budgeting for such, staffing, setup and tear down, working with talent, hosting of patrons, and being an Area Head in the Exhibits Division. You will plan and orchestrate all of the background work to make the place as close to Callahan’s Place as manageable within the context of Worldcon. We expect this area to work within the Exhibits Division and to also coordinate with the Tech Division, the Program Division, and the Events Division. This is fun! Please read Spider Robinson's books: Callahan's Crosstime Saloon and The Callahan Touch at least. If you are already a Callahan's fan, this is the job for you! We have someone in place with this experience from Sasquan to advise you. Please apply!

Time commitment: 

As Area Head, you will be expected to oversee the construction of the space during setup, hire people to staff the space through all the open hours of the Exhibit Hall, and oversee tear down at the end of the convention.

Pre-con you will participate in monthly communications with other members of the Exhibits Division staff via computer-aided meeting software. You will work on design, some construction of props either by themselves or supervision of others, budgeting, planning, writing marketing materials. Recruiting help early. Making sure things are underway throughout. Setting deadlines and meeting them. You should plan to devote approximately 10 hours per month to these activities.

Experience, attributes, skills, and/or abilities:

Prior experience as a Worldcon Area Head or above is preferred but not required.

Physical requirements: 

Must be able to recruit others to do the heavy lifting if necessary. Should be able to work up to 12 hours (during setup) with minimal breaks.
